A Father’s Resilience: Reflecting on Haiti’s 2010 Earthquake 15 Years Later

Fifteen years ago, on January 12, 2010, Haiti was shaken to its core. The devastating earthquake that struck near Port-au-Prince claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, left countless people injured, and displaced millions. Amidst the rubble, heartache, and loss, stories of courage, resilience, and survival emerged. One of these stories belongs to my father, Jasse Saint Jean.

I had the privilege of sitting down with my father recently to document his harrowing experience during and after the earthquake. His testimony serves as a powerful reminder of both the strength of the human spirit and the dire need for continued action in rebuilding our homeland.

15 Years Later: Progress Stalled

As we reflect on the 15 years that have passed, it’s disheartening to see how much remains the same in Haiti. Many of the promised reconstruction projects have either stalled or failed to materialize. Homes and infrastructure remain vulnerable to natural disasters, and the political and economic instability continues to hinder true progress.

My father’s story is one of survival, but it is also a call for action. There is so much work to be done to rebuild Haiti into a nation where its people can thrive. By sharing his journey, we hope to inspire others to remain engaged in the ongoing efforts to provide aid, foster development, and push for meaningful change.

I encourage you to watch the full interview with my father in the link below. His words are both a testimony of resilience and a plea for us to remember Haiti’s struggles and its unyielding spirit.

Together, we can honour the memories of those lost and ensure that Haiti’s future is brighter than its past. Let’s continue the conversation, share the stories, and work toward a day when Haitians no longer have to simply survive, but can truly thrive.
