As many of you may know, our nation and our people are facing yet another attack on our reputation, this time in Springfield, Ohio. There are rumors circulating that Haitians in the area are allegedly consuming pets, particularly cats and dogs. Sadly, Haiti has often been the target of such unfounded accusations, from being wrongfully blamed for the spread of AIDS in the past, to now facing baseless claims of eating animals.
We know these accusations are completely false, and while we do not need to prove otherwise, what we can do is highlight the beauty of our culture and heritage. We can share with the world the richness of our history, the warmth of our communities, and the love and pride we have for our homeland. Our stories and experiences are far more powerful than these falsehoods, and they deserve to be heard.
I love Haiti, and I know that if it weren't for the current challenges with insecurity, many of us would still be living there. For those of us who have had to leave, we carry Haiti in our hearts. We must take this opportunity to remind the world who we are: a resilient, proud, and culturally rich people.
In light of this, Storytelling Toronto, in collaboration with Abigail Whitney Productions and Haitians of Toronto, is thrilled to announce the launch of a new digital storytelling series that will celebrate and highlight the Haitian experience. We are inviting all Haitians to participate by sharing their personal stories through short video submissions.
Whether you grew up in Haiti or have visited, your story matters. This is your chance to offer a glimpse into your life, your childhood memories, and your deep connection to Haiti. Through this project, we aim to showcase the beauty of our culture, challenge misconceptions, and foster unity within the diaspora.
What We’re Looking For:
A short video (up to 5 minutes) where you share your childhood memories in Haiti or your experience visiting Haiti.
Open to all Haitians, regardless of age or background.
Your story can be told in English, French, or Haitian Creole.
How to Participate:
Record a video of up to 5 minutes, sharing your story.
Fill out the accompanying form with your details and story information.
Upload your video (instructions provided below).
Your voice matters, and we want to hear your unique perspective on what it means to be Haitian. By sharing our stories, we can collectively combat the negative narratives that have been unfairly cast upon us.
Submission Deadline:
We are accepting video submissions until September 30th, 2024.
Video Requirements:
Please film in vertical format.
Ensure that your audio is clear.
Use a background you feel comfortable with, or opt for a simple, solid background (such as a blank wall or curtain).

Look directly into the camera as you share your story.
Record your story in one take (editing will be handled by us).
Suggested Video Content:
