COMMUNITY EVENTS

CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY STUDY CIRCLE (JULY 20)

Come through on July 20 as we will be discussing The Haitian Revolution, focusing on the overlooked African political influence within the Revolution, the internal contradictions, and will look at what the Haitian Revolution stood for by looking at the Declaration of Independence and the Haitian Constitution (facilitated by Melanie Newton).

There is also an important community rally on Monday July 22 to call for Justice for Garvin Yapp, a farmworker who was killed at work. His employer is facing prosecution.

Community screenings of the award winning short film Doubles will be taking place July 26-29.

Wesli's musical journey is a true success story.

As a child, he made his first guitar with a can of oil and fishing line and a few years later in 2019, his 6th opus, Rapadou Kreyôl, was awarded the prestigious Canadian Juno and Quebec Félix awards for the best world music album of the year, as well as the Coup de Coeur prize of the Charles Cros Academy in France.

Born Wesley Louissaint in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he quickly became a prolific and recognized songwriter, guitarist and producer.

More recently in 2020, he won the Canadian Folk Music Award World Music Solo Recording, as well as the Independent Music Award in the United States for the track Lolé Lolé.

His tours have taken him across Canada, the United States, Haiti, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, South Korea, France, Switzerland, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast and Morocco. Don’t miss Wesli on Thursday August 22.

296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
